Module 5: Data Collection & Sampling

Understanding samples and choosing appropriate methods to collect data are key to well done research studies.

Required Readings

Video from Dr. Rath (Module 5) (3:14)

This is an overview video where I give a high level explanation of the readings and describe this week's tasks.

Lecture for Module 5 (4:12)

This is an overview of sampling.

Slides for Module 5

These are the slides that accompany the lecture for Module 5.e

Sheppard, Ch. 6, "Data Collection Strategies"

Covers experimental, quasi-experimental and non-experimental designs.

Bhattacherjee, Ch. 8, "Sampling"

This chapter contains several definitions that you will need as you read and decipher other articles.

Sheppard, Ch. 7, "Sampling Techniques"

This chapter can help you understand how to choose an accurate sample and provides different ways of explaining the same content as Bhattacherjee's chapter.

Supplementary Readings

These readings are optional but will give you more context.

DeCarlo, Ch. 12, "Experimental Design"

Stop at 12.3. Provides a nice glossary of terms (12.1) and a great description of internal and external validity (12.3)
