Module 6: Quantitative Research & Statistical Tests

This module lasts two weeks and covers basic quantitative research and basic statistical tests. In the first week it is recommended that you watch the overview and lecture videos, and read Sheppard chapters 8-9. In the second week it is recommended that you watch the "Statistics made easy" video, read Sheppard chapter 11 & DeCarlo 12.4 and complete the Excel activities.

Required Readings

(Week 1) Video from Dr. Rath (Module 6) (5:13)

This is an overview video where I give a high level explanation of the readings and describe this week's tasks.

(Week 1) Calculation of Correlation from Survey (4:13)

This is an optional video that shows how I analyzed a few of the questions from the class survey.

(Week 1) Lecture for Module 6 (9:12)

This video covers variables, the null hypothesis, and how to choose the right test.

(Week 1) Slides for Module 6

These are the slides for Module 6.

(Week 1) Sheppard, Ch. 8, "Data Collection Methods: Survey Research"

Includes considerations for choosing and using a survey. Pay special attention to wording of questions and answers as described in 8.6 and 8.7

(Week 1) DeCarlo, Ch. 11, "Survey Research"

Very similar to Sheppard's chapter.

(Week 1) Sheppard, Ch. 9, "Analysis of Survey Data"

A brief introduction to quantitative data

(Week 1) "Statistics made easy ! ! ! Learn about the t-test, the chi square test, the p value and more (12:49)"

A great video that uses height and weight and shows several different tests.

(Week 2) DeCarlo, 12.4 "Analyzing Quantitative Data"

Provides great definitions and description of major vocabulary terms.

(Week 2) Sheppard, Ch. 11, "Quantitative Interview Techniques & Considerations"

Explains a quantitative interview. Specifically pay attention to 11.4 on issues to consider when conducting an interview.

(Week 2) Scribbr, Choosing the Right Statistical Tests

A quick reference for choosing the right statistical test.

Supplementary Readings

These readings are optional but will give you more context.

Teach Me Statistics in Half an Hour (42:08)

A great video that covers all of the basic statistical content you'll need in 42 minutes.

Bhattacherjee, Ch. 15, "Quantitative Analysis: Inferential statistics"

Looks at making inferences from a quantitative dataset.

Run a T-Test in Excel (5:19)

How to run a t-test in Excel with just a formula!

Activities

Walkthrough for Descriptive Statistics Activity (5:12)

Due: March 13 @ 11:59pm

Video walkthrough of the activity with a different data set.

Descriptive Statistics in Excel Using the Data Analysis Tool (5:35)

Due: March 20 @ 11:59pm

A quick way to get descriptive statistics in Excel. Includes installation instructions for Windows PCs.

Descriptive Statistics Activity

Due:
